Steak and Tango:Two of the things that Buenos Aires is most well known for, and we didn’t do either of them because for one: we’re too cheap and both those things weren’t in our budget and for two: because we just didn’t really feel like it, and that’s ok. I’m sure the Tango show was amazing and the steak of the melt-in-your-mouth variety but what you don’t know you can’t miss right? Despite not doing the “tourist must do’s” we both really really enjoyed Buenos Aires, perhaps made more so by the fact that it was the first city we went to after Sao Paulo!! But no, in general Buenos Aires is great, the architecture is amazing and at practically every street corner I wanted to take a million pictures.In the center of the city we watched the “Madres ” walk around the square as a remembrance to their sons who went missing during the time when Argentina was under dictatorship (originally they gathered to ask for their sons back), and we went to the old slum La Boca with its brightly coloured houses and tourist trap stores but despite being full of tourists it has somehow still held onto its charm. We also stayed in a great hostel called Giramondo which always makes the experience just a little bit better! Sorry Kate, I know you requested a longer blog about B.A but I am feeling too pressured being so far behind with blogging! To end, Buenos Aires is one of the places in South America that I would absolutely return to.
Santiago: After Buenos Aires it was onto Santiago del Chile and the last stop on our mainland South America tour. We finally arrived in Santiago at around 1 am after a huge debacle in Buenos Aires with our flight being cancelled and trying to figure out what happened to our luggage and how we should proceed all in Spanish since no one from the airline spoke English(we lucked out and managed to get 2 of the 40 available seats on the next flight) so we showed up to the hostel a bit late but we had luckily made a reservation and they hadn’t given our beds away so we settled into The Princessa Insolente hostel for 2 nights. Our first day in Santiago was taken up with finding a hospital and getting Andi’s mandatory blood tests and we walked around the center a little bit, and when we got back to the hostel we met Chris and Karina and the rest of our night was a right off! They are an Australian couple (that we have all intentions of seeing again in Oz) and the night started out innocent enough with a few beers etc, until Karina and I went on a booze run and came back with 2 bottles of pisco, more beers and some coca-cola. The rest is a blank but I do remember something about the boys bringing in 2 massive pizzas at one point! The next day we went a bit in town with them, and lucky for us Chris is half Chilean so we got to have some “real” Chilean experiences that we prolley would have missed out on otherwise, like going to the fish market for lunch, having a peach syrup drink with wheat in it afterwards and learning about how the Americans bombed the Chilean parliament buildings (killing hundreds of people including the prime minister) on Sept 11th sometime in the 1960’s (don‘t quote me on the year though)……that night we went to the airport and slept there (thank you sleepinginairports.com for the recommendation on where to sleep!) and it was up early the next morning to leave mainland South America!
